Play Mahjong Solitaire Online
Mahjong Solitaire is a tile-matching puzzle game played on a stacked layout of 144 tiles. The goal is to clear the entire board by removing matched pairs of identical tiles. A tile is available to match only when it is free — not covered by another tile and not blocked on both left and right sides. Clear the board completely and you win.
Despite its name, Mahjong Solitaire is distinct from the four-player Mahjong played in East Asian countries. It is a solo puzzle game that originated in the 1980s and became one of the most widely played computer games of its era. The core mechanic — scanning a complex layout for available pairs — is easy to grasp but endlessly replayable.
How to Play
Click or tap any free tile to select it, then select a matching tile to remove the pair. A tile is free if nothing is stacked on top of it and if at least one side (left or right) is open. Tiles are grouped into suits — characters, bamboo, circles, winds, dragons, and flowers — and you match tiles of the same type within each group.
The game ends when the board is cleared or when no more legal matches exist. If you reach a dead end, a shuffle option can rearrange remaining tiles to open new possibilities.
Reading the Board
The real challenge of Mahjong Solitaire is not finding matches — it is finding the right matches. Removing a pair carelessly can bury tiles you will need later. A few habits help:
- Look deeper before matching on the surface. Tiles in lower layers are locked until the tiles above them are removed. Prioritize pairs that expose buried tiles.
- Watch for tiles with only one match remaining. If two identical tiles exist and one is buried, you need the other accessible pair to free it. Removing other copies of that tile by mistake can make the board unsolvable.
- Work inward. The center of most layouts is the most congested. Clearing a path inward early opens more options as the game progresses.
Classic Layouts and Endless Variety
The traditional Mahjong Solitaire layout is the Turtle — a multi-level pyramid shape — but dozens of named layouts exist. Different layouts change how the stacking works and which tiles get buried deepest, creating very different solving experiences from the same set of rules.

Who Plays Mahjong Solitaire?
Mahjong Solitaire attracts players who enjoy relaxed, unhurried puzzle sessions. The game moves at your pace — there is no timer pushing you forward. It is popular with players who enjoy Solitaire and other classic single-player card and tile games.
It is also genuinely beautiful. Traditional tile sets feature detailed iconography drawn from Chinese culture, and a well-designed layout has an almost meditative quality as it gradually clears. Many players return to it daily as a calm, satisfying ritual.
